Dr. Reddy’s started out as a supplier to Indian pharmaceutical companies, but it soon began exporting to other, less regulated markets. By doing this, it saved time and money by not having to build a manufacturing facility that would need to be approved by a drug licencing body like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Early in the 1990s, the company was able to focus on obtaining permission from drug authorities for its formulations and bulk drug production facilities in more developed countries thanks to the growing scale and profitability from these uncontrolled markets. This made it possible for them to enter regulated markets in the US and Europe.
