Object – To prepare and dispense 20ml Liquid paraffin emulsion.

Requirements –
- Chemicals – Liquid paraffin, Gum acacia, Gum tragacanth, Sodium benzoate, Vanillin, Glycerin, Chloroform
- Glassware – 1 Beaker, 1 Measuring cylinder, 1 Mortar pestle
Theory –
Emulsions are two-phase systems in which one liquid is dispersed throughout another liquid in the form of small droplets. Liquid paraffin is a mineral oil that is not soluble in water. To make it soluble, methyl cellulose is used as an emulsifying agent. Benzoic acid and chloroform are used as preservatives, whereas sodium saccharin and vanillin are used as sweetening and flavoring agents.

Procedure
- Weight all the ingredients in the required quantity.
- Triturate the Weighed quantity of liquid paraffin and chloroform with gum acacia, gum tragacanth and vanillin in mortar pestle.
- Add 5 ml of purified water and triturate until a creamy emulsion is formed.
- Dissolve sodium benzoate in small quantity of purified water.
- Add glycerin and solution of sodium benzoate with continuous trituration.
- Add sufficient purified water to produce 20ml of emulsion and mix properly.
- Transfer in a suitable container and then label.

Storage: Emulsion should be kept at temperature not exceeding 20oC. It should not be allowed to freeze.
Use: For internal use only.
Result: 20ml Liquid paraffin emulsion had been prepared and dispensed.
