Higher education is offered throughout all of India at the Birla Institute of Technology & Science, or BITS Pilani. BITS’ main goal is to “educate young people who are able and enthusiastic to develop and implement such ideas, methods, procedures, and information.” The Institute is the realisation of the founder, late Mr. G.D. Birla, an accomplished industrialist, activist for Indian independence, and close friend of the late Mr. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi). Beginning as a modest school in the early 1900s, it developed into a collection of schools for higher learning, spanning from the humanities to engineering, until 1964, when all of these institutions merged to form a distinctive Indian University with a strong international reputation. The Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, or BITS, Pilani, is the name given to this institution of higher learning.
