Object – To prepare and dispense 20ml Strong Iodine Solution I.P.
Requirements –
- Chemicals – Iodine, Potassium iodide, Alcohol and Distilled water
- Glassware – 1 Beaker, 1 Measuring cylinder, 1 Mortar pestle
Theory –
The iodine is very slightly soluble in water. Its solubility can be increased by potassium iodide. Potassium iodide reacts with iodine to form polyiodide, which is more soluble in 50% alcohol. As the preparation is used internally as well as externally, 90% alcohol is used as a vehicle. Alcohols absorb heat from the body and get evaporated, thereby causing a cooling effect.

Calculation:
Iodine used for 20ml strong Iodine solution – = 2gm
Potassium iodide used for 20ml strong Iodine solution – = 1.2gm
90% alcohol used for 20ml strong Iodine solution – 90ml alcohol + 10ml water
Procedure
- Triturate iodine and potassium iodide in mortar pestle.
- The add 1/4th quantity of 90% alcohol.
- Transfer in a beaker and shake it well to dissolve.
- Then add purified water to make up the required volume.
- Transfer it to suitable container, label it and submit it.
