Object – To prepare and dispense 10ml Aluminium acetate ear drops.

Requirements –

  • Chemicals – Aluminium acetate, Acetic acid, Tartaric acid, Calcium carbonate.
  • Glassware – 1 Beaker, 1 Measuring cylinder, Sintered glass filter.

Theory –

Ear drops are liquid preparations and usually are suspension or emulsion or solution of one or more medicaments in vehicles suitable for instillation into the ear. Eye drops are generally safe for the ears even if there is a hole in the eardrum. Eye drops are generally gentle enough for the middle ear. The ingredients of the ear drops are different depending on the purpose, 15 ml to be dispensed unless otherwise directed.

Ear drops range from liquids designed to soften ear wax, to medicines made to cure bacterial infections, to medicines against fungus. Many kinds of eye drops can be used in the ear but the opposite in not true. Ear drops are too harsh for the eyes.

Procedure

  1. Weigh required amount of aluminium sulphate and dissolve in 5 ml purified water.
  2. Add acetic acid and then calcium carbonate.
  3. Add remaining amount of purified water and mix properly.
  4. Allow to stand for not less than 24 hrs in a cool place and stir it occasionally.
  5. Filter the solution after 24hrs.
  6. Add tartaric acid in the filtrate and mix.
  7.  Transfer in to a suitable container, cork it, label and then submit.

Category: Astringent and as a local antiperspirant.

Storage: Store in a closed air tight container at a temperature not more than 25oC.

Use: As a powerful astringent and as a local antiperspirant.

Result: 10ml Aluminium acetate ear drop had been prepared and dispensed.
