Mumbai, Maharashtra is home to the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), a public sector organisation in India. It is entirely owned by the Indian government and is in charge of producing electricity using nuclear energy. The Department of Atomic Energy oversees NPCIL (DAE). According to the Companies Act of 1956, NPCIL was founded in September 1987 with the purpose of “undertaking the design, construction, operation, and preservation of the atomic power stations for electricity generation in accordance with the terms of the schemes and programmes of the Government of India under the provision of the Atomic Energy Act 1962.” All nuclear power plants run by the company are ISO-14001 certified (Environment Management System). Up until the establishment of BHAVINI Vidyut Nigam in October 2003, NPCIL was the only organisation in charge of building and running India’s commercial nuclear power projects. The corporation had 21 nuclear reactors with a combined installed capacity of 6780 MWe running at seven different locations as of August 10, 2012. The company has had issues with private businesses “poaching” its staff since the government decided to allow private companies to provide nuclear power.
