Requirements –
- Chemicals – Cetrimide, Cetostearyl alcohol, Liquid paraffin
- Glassware – 2 Beaker, 1 Measuring cylinder, 1 Mortar pestle
Theory –
Cetrimide or alkyl-trimethyl ammonium bromide is an antiseptic which is a mixture of three quaternary, ammonium compounds: tetradonium bromide, cetrimonium bromide and laurtrimonium bromide. It is a creamy white, voluminous, free-flowing powder, a faint odour and has a bitter test. It is freely soluble in water but soluble in warm water and practically insoluble in solvent ether. It is used as a bactericide and astringent. Cetostearyl alcohol and liquid paraffin are used as emulsifying agents in this formulation. Purified water is act as a vehicle.

Procedure
- Weight all the ingredients in the required quantity.
- Dissolve cetostearyl alcohol in the liquid paraffin with the help of heat in one beaker (Oily Phase).
- In another beaker at the same temperature dissolve cetrimide in purified water (Aqueous Phase).
- Add first beaker preparation (Oily Phase) in warm condition to second beaker preparation (Aqueous Phase).
- Stir the mixture until it cool.
- Transfer in a suitable container and then label.
