Requirements –

• Chemicals – Iodine, Potassium iodide and Distilled water
• Glassware – 1 Conical flask, 1 Measuring cylinder, 1 Mortar pestle

Theory –

Iodine is wider antiseptic agent which is effective against bacteria, fungi, yeast, protozoa and viruses. It is slightly soluble in water. Its solubility in water can be increased by addition of complex forming agent like potassium iodide.
Beside complexing agent, potassium iodide is an anti-thyroid drug. This solution is also known as aqueous iodine solution I.P., which is used orally as source of iodine, as well as in treatment of alkaloid poisoning. Few drops of Lugol’s solution in drinking water is bactericidal and amoebicidal. Orally, this solution causes irritation and hence; should be well diluted with water or milk.

Procedure

1. Triturate iodine and potassium iodide in mortar pestle.
2. The add 1/4^th quantity of vehicle.
3. Transfer in a conical flask and shake it well to dissolve.
4. Then add purified water to make up the required volume.
5. Transfer it to suitable container, label it and submit it.
